Preparing for the big day

Commencement is a celebration, a culmination of years of work towards your degree. There are several steps to complete before you can participate in Commencement. The following checklists will help you ensure you meet the requirements and deadlines. Click here to download checklist

Commencement Checklist for Master's or Doctoral Degree Candidates

Step 1: Eligibility deadlines

If you are receiving a Master's or Doctoral degree and wish to participate in Commencement, you need to have completed the appropriate paperwork on time. Please note there is a difference between filing for graduation and completing the graduate commencement form.

Step 2: Update your personal information in PeopleSoft

Review your personal information in PeopleSoft at, and update as appropriate - local and permanent address, phone and email.

Step 3: Ph.D. Candidates - Confirm your Dissertation Chair Attendance

The individual who will be hooding you must confirm their attendance and order their regalia via Mary Gould by March 21, 2014 .

Step 4: Order your Cap and Gown, etc.

All graduates participating in the Commencement ceremony must wear academic regalia. The UH Bookstore will begin fitting students for their regalia on the following schedule.

  • February 24-27: – Graduation Fair; In Store Regalia Orders
  • March 15: – Last day for online orders
  • April 21 to May 10: – Pick up regalia from the bookstore.

Students may also order formal invitations through the bookstore.

  • Master Degree Candidates:
    To preorder your regalia go to
    Master Keeper Cap, Gown, Tassel and Hood $74.00
    Honor Cords for students graduating with a 3.70 cumulative GPA or higher: $14.50
  • Doctoral Candidates:
    To preorder your regalia go to
    Doctoral Rental Tam, Gown, Tassel and Hood $122.00
    Honor Cords for students graduating with a 3.70 cumulative GPA or higher: $14.50
  • Cougar Sprit Cords:
    Make a minimum $15 donation (perhaps a gift in honor of your class, $20.14) to any college or program of your choice and wear the cord at commencement to show your Cougar Pride!

Orders placed after the deadline will not be guaranteed to arrive in time for commencement. For questions regarding regalia purchase, call the UH Bookstore at (713) 748-0923 or order online from Herff Jones Company.

Rented Ph.D. caps and gowns will be available for pickup at the campus bookstore. All Doctoral gowns should be returned to bookstore representatives after the ceremony. Ph.D. candidates will be hooded at Commencement. Mary Gould will provide the hoods. Hoods will be placed on stage for all Ph.D. candidates.

Step 5: RSVP for Commencement

Not all students who graduate choose to walk in the Commencement ceremony. Please confirm your participation in the ceremony by filling out the Graduate Commencement Form.

Step 6: Attend Graduate Commencement – Saturday, May 10, 2014
  • Graduating students are asked to gather in the O’Quinn Great Hall (located in the UH Alumni Center) at 8 a.m. to assemble and line up for the procession to Hofheinz Pavilion.
  • Check-in tables will be labeled: MBA, EMBA, MS Finance, MS Accounting, and Ph.D.
  • Staff will be available to assist the master’s candidates with their hoods.
Walk Cards
  • At the check-in tables, pick up a walk card which lists your name, pronunciation of your name (if you have provided this information), address and the degree you earned.
  • Be sure to check your card carefully and make any necessary corrections. The photographer will send proofs to the email address printed on the card. KEEP THIS CARD WITH YOU UNTIL YOU REACH THE STAGE. THE CARD WILL BE USED TO CALL YOUR NAME.
  • Bauer College of Business staff will be available to direct you regarding procedures for the processional, presentation of the graduates and candidates, and recessional. Candidates will line up by degree in alphabetical order.
  • Each graduate will be individually recognized as he or she crosses the stage.
  • Ph.D. candidates: since you will be hooded by your Dissertation Chair during the ceremony, Mary Gould will provide you your hood which you will carry to the platform.
Students with DisABILITIES (CSD)
  • Registered CSD Students needing any additional services or have special requests must notify the Center for Students with DisABILITIES (CSD) at least 2 WEEKS prior to their scheduled commencement ceremony. Center for Students with DisABILITIES (CSD) can be reached at 713-743-5400 or for any additional assistance and/or specific questions.

  • Diplomas are mailed out by the Graduation Office in E. Cullen about three months after graduation. If you can see in PeopleSoft that your degree has been posted but your diploma is overdue, please call the Graduation Office at (713) 743-9352. If your graduation status still says "Pending", then your degree has not yet been posted.
