Laptop Requirement

Laptop/Notebook Required for MBA Students

All students accepted into the MBA program must have a laptop/notebook available to them to bring to class for the duration of the program. Although the laptop is not required in every class, there are several, such as statistics and marketing among others, for which the computer is mandatory. In some classes, you will be required to add specific software to the laptop. You must have administrative rights on your laptop to install this software and make system-level changes. If you use a laptop at work and are required to use your company’s IT department to make such changes, this laptop does not satisfy the MBA requirements.

In purchasing a laptop, you’ll want to consider these issues:

  1. Processor- faster is better, processors in laptops in the $600--$1000 range are usually acceptable.
  2. System Memory (RAM)–more is better – 4GB would work well for most applications;
  3. Hard Drive Capacity – photos and music take up a lot of space – a lot more than your school work - you’ll likely want 200 MB or more.
  4. Operating System – Windows 7 is a good way to go. The Mac operating system is also popular.
  5. Other nice-to-have’s – built-in wireless capability and camera, for video conferencing in your groups.
  6. Software – Buy it at school! Microsoft Office for students at UH costs less than $20!

Additionally, laptop screen size and weight are important considerations, but they are of secondary importance for the MBA program. Please note that the "mini notebooks" will not qualify as a recommended laptop. In our experience we have not been able to run statistical and accounting software’s on these computers.

Our on-campus computer store, Cougar Byte sells hardware and is the place to buy licensed software for your use as a student.
