Ted Bauer Leadership Certificate Program

Requirements/Degree Program to Earn Certificate:

  • Enrollment in/completion of GENB 2301
  • Successful interview and placement

During the first semester, TBLCP members will partake in four core leadership workshops in which they will gain self-awareness and learn about their cohort as well. Upon completion of the core leadership requirements, participants will select a service project to complete with other members of the leadership cohort.

Fall Semester: Core Leadership Requirements 20 points

5 Practices of Exemplary Leaders

In this foundational workshop, TBLCP participants will learn about the research surrounding the program, practices and behaviors of successful CEOs, and about how to start the process of becoming an accomplished leader while studying at UH and beyond.

Do you want the opportunity to do what you do best every day? We can help you develop your Strengths and discover the path to happiness in your future career!

During this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to make the most of their Strengths as identified through StrengthsQuest in order to

  • Advance leadership skills
  • Promote yourself in an interview
  • Operate in a team comprised of people with differing areas of strength
  • Find a good fit for your future career

Career Vision

Inspiring leaders have a talent for sharing their visions and getting people to believe in and support that vision. As current and future leaders, you will utilize your natural talents to cultivate the skills needed to create a vision, get buy-in from your team, and apply that vision to make it a reality! You will leave this workshop with a working career vision and an action plan with a timeline for accomplishment.

Leading Dynamic Teams

Strong leaders surround themselves with talented teams in order to accomplish their vision and goals. One of the most important aspects of leadership is understanding how to lead a team and how to utilize your Strengths to make a team more effective. This workshop requires participants to engage in cooperative team building activities and strategies in order to learn to:

  • Understand dynamics within teams
  • Discover your role in different team scenarios
  • Identify and utilize key talents among team members

In the second semester, members can personalize their leadership education and experience by selecting workshops to meet their individual needs in practical skills and further self development. The students will be able to track progress within the program by adhering to the following point system. When a student has met all of the requirements for the program he/she will have accumulated 100 points.

Fall/Spring Semester: Experiential Leadership Requirements 60 points

Leadership Assessment (SLPI)

  • Participants must complete the SLPI online assessment and ask at least two cohort members to serve as observers in addition to at least 6 other observers
  • Participants will participate in one of the large group debriefing sessions and create and action plan for self improvement Experiencing Leadership:
  • Participants must participate in two of the following leadership experiences and write a 150 word reflection on which leadership behavior they learned about or practiced during the activity.

Community Service Project

Participants must complete 30 hours of service with other members from the cohort

Participants must complete a 500 word reflection paper utilizing knowledge of The Student Leadership Challenge (Kouzes and Posner) and answering the following questions:

  • What did I learn about my strengths and the strengths of others? (challenges and benefits of other strengths)
  • Which one of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership did I practice or learn about through observation during this project?
  • Based on my experience, which leadership practice or behaviors do I need to improve?
  • What did I observe about my team members during this project?

Leadership Reflection Paper

Participants must complete a 1000 word reflection paper on their experience in the TBLCP answering the following questions:

  • What next steps will I take to implement my vision for the future?
  • Give examples of how I practiced each of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leaderships throughout my TBLCP experience.
  • Based on my experience, which leadership practice behaviors do I need to improve?
  • What is my legacy? How will I make a difference and have a positive impact? What are my plans for implementing what I have learned about myself and utilizing the skills I have gained?
