Department of Accountancy & Taxation Newsletter & Highlights Fall 2023 | University of Houston, C. T. Bauer College of Business

Greetings Accounting Alumni,

Welcome to the second issue of the Bauer Department of Accountancy & Taxation e-newsletter. In this issue, we highlight some of the major accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff.

The Fall term is now well underway, and we’ve seen an uptick in our BBA Accounting enrollments both in the in-person and online programs. Our STEM-designated Master of Science in Accountancy continues to offer high quality instruction with a balance of accomplished academic researchers and top professionals from the business community.

As most accounting departments in Texas are doing, we are analyzing our curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to determine how we can revise our curriculum to help our students meet the revised educational requirements to take the CPA exam in the state. We are also continuing to work with our advisory board and partner companies to ensure our students graduate with the skillsets they need to be successful in their careers.

The Department of Accountancy & Taxation and Bauer College would like to thank our donors, alumni, employers, and friends for their continued support. Thank you for hiring our graduates, volunteering to mentor our students, helping us recruit the next generation of accountants, providing financial support to help our students achieve their dreams, and offering feedback on how we can enhance our programs.

Go Coogs!

Chair’s Special Recognition Spotlight
Photo: Joe Seltz

Joe Seltz, a Senior Professor of Practice, led the Department’s application and successful achievement of becoming a STEM designated degree for the Master of Science in Accountancy program. At the time we achieved this designation, there were two other MS Accountancy programs in Texas, and less than 50 nationwide, that were STEM designated. Seltz’s efforts in overseeing the application process were critical in attaining STEM designation and we are thankful for his dedication and hard work in supporting our students.
