2015 has been an eventful and exciting year for the doctoral programs at Bauer!
The goal of our doctoral programs is to produce top-notch scholars – future stewards of their respective disciplines – by creating a culture of excellence in research, teaching and service.
The purpose of this newsletter is to celebrate the accomplishments of Bauer faculty, current doctoral students and alumni, and to highlight the factors that make our program unique such as job market training, soft-skills workshops, and an active intellectual community.
The current and continued success of the doctoral program would not be possible without the support and vision of numerous individuals. I am grateful to Dean Ramchand, Associate Deans George and Scamell, the dedicated group of six departmental Ph.D. coordinators, the Bauer communications team, and of course our very own faculty, staff and doctoral students who strive for excellence daily.
I am delighted to present you with the inaugural newsletter of the Bauer Doctoral Programs.
Happy reading!
Dr. Vanessa Patrick-Ralhan
Bauer Professor of Marketing and Director of Bauer Doctoral Programs

BAUER Ph.D.: KNOW THE EDGE
We are delighted to unveil our new doctoral program visual signature in this inaugural newsletter. We conducted a mini crowdsourcing exercise with some of our senior doctoral students aimed at creating a tagline and visual signature specifically for the doctoral programs (inspired by Bauer College’s "Where Awesome Happens"). MIS doctoral student Vanessa Durner's (pictured above) conceptualization and design resulted in a strikingly creative, yet professional, visual signature that will symbolize the intellectual prowess and academic excellence that we strive for at Bauer.

RECENT EVENTS
Job market workshop: In summer 2015, senior Bauer doctoral students (3rd year and up) participated in a job market training workshop. During the course of the workshop, students were exposed to the Assertion-Evidence model of slide creation, were given the opportunity to practice their presentation and interview skills, and became familiar with effective verbal and non-verbal means of communication. This training has equipped Bauer students to better communicate their research both on the job market, at conferences, and in
the classroom.
GRaSP Presentations: Three doctoral students from the Department of Marketing & Entrepreneurship at the Bauer College presented dissertation research at the University of Houston’s inaugural Graduate Research and Scholarships Project Day (GRaSP) in Fall 2014.
Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week: The UH Graduate School, in recognition of graduate and professional students’ intellectual, teaching and cultural contributions to the University of Houston community, partnered with the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students to celebrate Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week in April.
