During the doctoral program orientation this year, I used these beautiful words from one of my favorite authors, Rebecca Solnit, to illustrate to our incoming cohort of doctoral students that our doctoral program at Bauer is designed to provide them with the tools for success in academia, but it is they themselves who have to use these tools with skill, grit and hard work to achieve academic success.
This newsletter is a collection of the stories of recent successes and achievements in the Bauer doctoral program. In this issue, I want to highlight the student experience here at Bauer. You will read about the outstanding achievements of students and faculty recognized by the Doctoral program awards. Doctoral alumnus, Codou Samba, a recent graduate from the Management department, placed in University of Tennessee (a Tier 1 research institution), eloquently captures her experience as a doctoral student at Bauer. In addition, the newsletter documents the awards and student experiences that point to the constellations that are being made everyday here at Bauer.
I wish you all a happy and productive Fall semester.

Doctoral Alumni Codou Samba on her experience as a doctoral student at Bauer
Bauer is definitely where awesome has happened for me! As I participated in the Spring 2016 Bauer Convocation ceremony, I was overcome by the undeniable truth of this simple, but powerful statement. I chose the Bauer College to pursue my Ph.D. because I firmly believed that the Management Ph.D. program would provide me with a solid training in conceptual thinking and methods of research. I was confident that Bauer would prepare me well for a career in academia… and it has!
Throughout my time at Bauer, I have learned from high caliber faculty. I highly value the guidance and support that my advisor, Dr. Dusya Vera, has provided me with. She has been a great leader, mentor, advocate and friend for me, as well as for many in the doctoral program. Dr. Steve Werner and Dr. Jim Hess provided me with strong research method competencies. Dr. Chet Miller instilled in me the pursuit for high-quality theory and scholarship. Dr. Vanessa Patrick inspired me to aim high in my job search and pursue my dream of joining a Tier-1 institution. Dr. Dale Rude and Dr. Skip Szilagyi guided me in my teaching and the practical sides of my research. Every faculty member in the Department of Management has helped in one way or another during my journey as a doctoral student.

Future Faculty Fellows: New Professor Training
and So Much More
By Alex Tawse, 3rd Year Doctoral Student of Management
This August I participated in the Future Faculty Fellows (F3), a program organized by the Graduate School at the University of Houston to help prepare graduate students for a career in academia. The F3 program follows a best practices framework developed by the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), a coalition of 23 research universities that strives to enhance the quality of undergraduate education. The Fellowship is comprised of a series of workshops, discussions and seminars designed to improve teaching and assessment skills. Following a full day boot camp that covers the nuts and bolts of being a college professor, participants choose from a variety of two or three-hour workshops offered over a three-week period. The workshops include topics like Engaging Students, Managing a Classroom, and Teaching Online, and each session is taught by a member of the UH faculty recognized for teaching excellence.
