Ring Topology

• The time required for the data to travel around the ring between the interconnected computers is called the walk time.

• As the message travels around the ring, the computers check the address of the incoming signal and

  • acknowledge the receipt or
  • retransmit the message to the next computer and generate a negative acknowledgement to the message sender.

• A loss of a computer does not stop the operation of the network, break in a cable does.

• Ring topology connects all

computers in a closed loop

with each computer

linked to the next.

• Messages pass around the ring

in one direction only to each

computer in turn.
