Decentralized Routing

• 2. The purpose of Dynamic Routing is to improve network performance by routing messages over the fastest possible route, away from traffic on busy circuits and busy computers.

• An initial routing table is developed by the network manager, but it is continuously updated by the computers themselves to reflect changing network

conditions such as network traffic.

• Updating is done in two ways:

  • 1. By monitoring outgoing messages to see how long they take to transmit and how long it takes the receiving computer to acknowledge them.
  • 2. Each computer periodically reports how busy it is.
