The microcomputer and LAN explosion in the late 1980’s
Today estimated 60 % of the corporate computer processing power resides on microcomputer based LANs
Many predict that by the end of the century mainframes are going to contain less than 20% of the corporate computing power.
Reasons:
- low-cost popular applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics
- managers’ frustration with the IS department and mainframe applications (In the late 1980’s many large organizations had a back log of two to three years).
