Note 1: American Revolution, May 15, 1777 - March 3, 1779. First NC Regiment, Col. Thomas Clark,
Commander. Also served in Ninth NC Reg., in Harper's Row. (See also pg. 145, in Dr. Freeland's book.)
Note 2: John Stroud, eldest son of Barnard and Keziah Harker Stroud, was born in Amwell Township, New Jersey in 1732; he died in Clarke County, GA in 1806 and was buried in Mars Hill
Churchyard. His grave is marked by the Georgia Daughters of the American Revolution.
He joined the Colonial Army in PA and fought with his brother, Jacob, in the French
and Indian Wars. John and Jacob were both with Wolfe in the closing battle at Quebec.
John also fought at Fort William Henry on Lake George, in September 1759, the
crowning victory of Wolfe over Montcalm.
Dr. Freeland's official DAR records state that John Stroud was a private in Capt. Sharpe's Company, First North Carolina
Regiment, Continental Line, served 1777-1780.
Other records are found in Georgia
Genealogical Magazine, January 1962, Folks Huxford, p. 135; also Roster of
Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia, by McCall, Vol. I, p. 162.
In the spring of 1756
John Stroud married Sarah Conley. I have as yet found no specific information about
her family. The name is spelled variously--Connally, etc. About 1757, John, his
bride, his brothers Samuel and James and two of their sisters moved to Suffolk,
VA. A short time later, John moved his family to Hillsboro, Orange County, NC. Here
they remained until after the American Revolution. His son, Mark, was also enlisted
as a private in the North Carolina Reserves and was engaged in the Battle of
Guilford Courthouse. Around 1787, the John Stroud family, together with in-laws
and neighbors, left their NC homes and moved to GA. There are reasons to believe
that some of the families may have settled or paused for a time in SC. The stories
of grants to the fertile land in GA appealed to the post-war discontented Strouds
and despite the primitive traveling and living conditions they began the long journey.
They traveled hundreds of miles through uncleared forests and trails, over hills, rivers,
and swamp lands. They first pitched tents in Burke County, GA; but after a year moved
on to Hancock County where the families began to split up. Soon the Strouds, Crows,
Meltons and other allied failies were scattered over GA and eventually their descendants
could be found in AL, MS, LA and even far-off TX where my ancestors from daughter
Elizabeth Stroud Crow planted new roots. John and Sarah Conley Stroud settled and
remained until each died in 1806 in Clarke County, GA. They are both buried in Mars
Hill Cemetery. They became active in the Mars Hill Baptist Church; he served as a
deacon and some records show he was a minister there for a time. (Dr. Freeland)
has a copy of his will and from it was able to secure the names of the children
as well as other important information.
Mrs. Howard H. McCall's Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia Vol. I,Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2004. pg. 162 states:
"John Stroud, b. Amwell NJ 1732, d. Clarke GA. Buried Mars Hill Cemetery, Clarke County GA (grave marked by GA. DAR)

0. Sir William Stroud
b. 1589 Shepton, Mallet Somerset England
d. Dec 1666 Bemister Somerset England
"William Stroud was a close friend of Oliver Cromwell. He was the grandfather to Barnard Stroud.
His friendship with Cromwell was probably the reason why Barnard's parent were killed.
He was in the House of Commons.
Taken from Strode Family by Vic Ledger: "William followed commercial pursuits from which he acquired great
wealth and reputation for integrity and honesty. In 1627 he purchased the estate of Barrington Court, in
Somerset County, which had a great mansion house upon it. Then in a very short time, he became owner of
many other estates -- at Martlock, Glastonbury, Street, and other places in Somersetshire.
"In Richard Symond's Diary, Symond states that 'William Strode
... lived at Barrington -- 3 myle from Ilminister -- had another house at Street, and hath all the parsonages
between this town and Barrington
... his wealth was obtained by being a factor in Spain and the inheritance he received from his
father, William Strode, who was a clothier in Shepton-Mallet
...' "The Strodes served over a 200 year period as members of Parliament from Somerset County.
William Strode was reelected as a member of Parliament to represent Ilchester, County Somerset in
1640. Thus he served his county in one of the most momentous times in
English history.
The Long Parliament (1640-1653) had two William Strodes as members. This has caused
much confusion.
"The similarities of names and principals for which both stood caused this William
Strode of Barrington and the William Strode, 'one of five members' impeached by Charles I, to be confused
by historians, who should have known better. While William Strode of Barrington was in Parliament,
having been returned there from the borough of Ilchester, and being a member of the Long Parliament of
1640, he could not have been one of the 'five members' for the following reasons:
"William Strode, M.P. -- 'The Member' -- died in 1645 and was buried in Henry VII's Chapel in Westminster Abbey.
William Strode of Barrington did not die until 1666.
"That there were two contemporary William Strodes, who were members of the Long Parliament, is clearly
proven by the Calendar of State Papers,
'... Proclamation for the apprehension of William Strode of the County of Devon, who was accused of sedition
... was one of the representatives of the borough of Beer Alston in Devonshire.
In Collision's Notes and Queries, Second Series, Volume XII, on page 461,
'...William Strode, 'the member' ... son of Sir William Strode of Devon ... Beer Alson ... Long Parliament of 1640
... died 1645.'
To compound confusion the fathers of these two Williams were also named William.
"William Strode, M.P. for Ilchester in the Long Parliament of 1640, was son of William Strode,
clothier of Shepton-Mallet ... he distinguished himself by opposition to the King's authority in
Somersetshire ... The State Papers abound with notices of him during this period,
and he appears to have been a source of trouble and annoyance to the King, the Bishop, and the Sheriff ...
funeral for him was held in the year 1666.
"There is more than sufficient evidence to distinguish between the two William Strodes. Both were heavily
involved in the opposition to King Charles I as members of Parliament. This mistaken identity has
caused much confusion and misinformation amongst Strode descendants in the U.S.
Many American descendants have claimed descent from William of Devonshire, the 'one of five members' impeached.
In many cases the tradition has been perpetuated without documentation. We feel confident that William
Strode of Barrington, Somersetshire is the correct ancestor to the line of Strodes being traced."
William died on 20 December 1666 at Barrington and was buried at Beminster, Dorset, England. Wallace Barr, Jr.,
in The Strode - Barr Descendancy includes a chapter entitled "The Strodes of Shepton Mallet and Civil War"
(referencing The Shepton Mallet Story: A Brief Historical Sketch by Fred Davis, Alan Blandford and Lewis
Beckerleg)"

Notes for STEPHEN CROW:
Some info from Dale Morgan, Census records, Court records from Clark Co. GA. Stephen is listed as a Revolutionary War
soldier, with metal. Grave stone says Georgia Troops Revolutionary War. On the 1792 Chatham Co. NC census, Stephen Crow, plus
4 males under 16 years and 2 females. Also in that census were Isaac, James, John, William Crow. 1800 census Chatham Co. NC.
12101-00001-02. On the 1820 Clarke County Georgia census, he appears with one male child between 16 and 26, himself as over 45
and one female between 10 and 16 and wife, over 45. 1830 Clarke Co. GA. census.
In May 1796, Stephen and his wife Margaret, sold 150 acres of land at Stumpy Mountain to his brother John. In November of that
same year Stephen bought 200 acres of land on Haw River from his brother Isaac, and his wife Elizabeth. The property was
on the "North side of Haw River, to Ruben Crow's line." Also included was 30 acres with all the houses, orchards,
and gardens. This was probably the portion of property left to Isaac in his father's will. It included the old home
place. It is believed that Stephen went to Georgia after selling his property. The deed was witnessed by his brother
John. Stephen moved to Clarke County, Georgia between 1800 and 1804. He participated in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery.
One of the requirements to be eligible to draw in the lottery was to have been a resident of Georgia for at least one year.
He was not successful in drawing any land in 1805 but drew again in 1807 as a resident of Brown's District, Clarke County.
He received land in Wilkinson County, Georgia. In December 1808, as a resident of Clarke County, he sold 250 acres of
land in North Carolina to his brother John. The land was on the North side of Haw River, by Wilkinson Creek. In
1827, Stephen drew in another Georgia land lottery and drew land in Muscogee and Coweta counties, Georgia.
Two records state that Stephen served in Knight's Revolutionary Soldier's and McCall's Roster of Revolutionary Soldier's,
both in Georgia. These records are likely incorrect as he was not in Georgia at the time. Most likely he did service
in Chatham County, North Carolina and he was listed as Stephen Cron in Captain Isiah Hogan's Company. His name
mis-spelled as was the names of his brothers, John, James, and Joshua.
Stephen reportedly came to Georgia around 1801 but it may have been earlier. He was active in land deals, buying his
first land, 150 acres, in 1783. He is one of the executors of his father's will in 1792. His father does not bequeath
to Stephen any land. There were at least eight tracts of land registered to Stephen Crow in Clarke County, Georgia
prior to 1800.
Stephen was admitted to the membership of Mar's Hill Baptist Church on 1801/1804, by experience and excluded from
the membership on Jan. 17, 1806. There was no explanation given for this but just few months earlier, Stephen and
his father-in-law were fishing and John Stroud either fell from a boat or a foot bridge (I've heard two versions)
and drowned. Stephen was possibly considered a drunkard. His sister-in-law, Elizabeth Stroud, apparently never forgave him.
Will of Stephen Crow. Names wife Margaret, sons Abner, Aaron, Martin, Joshua, Eli, daughter Rachel Burnett. Appoint
wife Margaret Crow, Issac Crow, and William Stroud, my executors. Will witness 8th day of June 1830, and proved July 7,
1834. On file in Clarke County, Georgia, book B page 135.
Stephen Crow is buried on the outside of the fence to the Stroud cemetery lot. Elizabeth Stroud Crow did not think
that Stephen was "quality" so refused to allow him to be buried in the Stroud plot. Elizabeth was married to Stephen's
brother Isaac Crow. The death date is in question because his will was not probated until 1834.
1827 Lottery drew as Rev. soldier, 2 draws. 1805 Lottery, GA. 2 draws, Clarke Co. GA. (now Oconee County).
Key researcher for this family has been Sydney Davis.
