Gateways

• Gateways are the interface between two or more dissimilar networks. They overcome both hardware and software incompatibilities.

• Gateways

  • translate one network protocol to another
  • translate data formats
  • open sessions between application programs
  • can be computers with special software, FEPs or special circuit cards.
  • Three types:
    • 1. network-to-network,
    • 2. system-to-network,
    • 3. system-to-system
