Gateways
Gateways are the interface between two or more dissimilar networks. They overcome both hardware and software incompatibilities.
Gateways
- translate one network protocol to another
- translate data formats
- open sessions between application programs
- can be computers with special software, FEPs or special circuit cards.
- Three types:
- 1. network-to-network,
- 2. system-to-network,
- 3. system-to-system
operate at the Application Layer
