Operating Standards

The Bauer College of Business (BCB) has a current student population of 4,435 undergraduates and 1,865 graduates/certificate students.  The full-time faculty currently numbers 137 (81 tenure track).  Our staff consists of approximately 181 members.  We also employ about 220 of our students in roles that support our mission.

The Bauer College is organized into five academic departments, ten centers of excellence and numerous operational groups: These groups range in orientation from student services to external relations to administration to maintenance.  BCB operates under a centralized structure with regard to business operations.  Under the supervision of each department business administrator or program manager, financial, HR and payroll documents are prepared by office coordinators, office assistants, administrative assistants, financial coordinators or by department business administrators directly.  These items are approved by the designated budget authority for each area.  Requests or expenditures for travel, equipment, etc. by college faculty are based upon prior authorization by the departmental chair, director of business operations or dean. Supervisory personnel approve all reimbursements for personnel under their direct supervision.  All financial, payroll, HR and systems access transactions prepared within the departments and centers are submitted to the Dean’s Business Office for certification and further routing to UH central departments.  The business office also plays a central supporting role in staff affairs, hiring, training and performance reviews.

Adherence to solid and ethical business standards is practiced at every level.  These standards and processes are outlined in the pages that follow.

Role of Staff in the Bauer Mission

The mission of the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston is three-fold:  (1) to create and disseminate knowledge that improves the real world of business, (2) to link that scholarly achievement to high-quality learning experiences for a diverse undergraduate and graduate student body, and (3) to prepare our students for responsible business leadership worldwide.  The vision of the C. T. Bauer College of Business is to become Houston's best business resource.

Staff are an integral part of the customer service experience in the BCB.  Because we are a school of business, we are well stocked with resources to operate our business functions in a modern and exemplary way.  For many of our students, this may be their first glimpse of the internal workings of a large organization.  This is a prime opportunity to enhance their learning outside of their classroom curriculum by modeling successful business tactics such as efficiency, customer service and good ethics.

For our well seasoned customers, such as donors and business partners, their expectation is that we conduct business in a fashion that reflects the solid practices that our professors are teaching in the classrooms.   Their evaluation of our professionalism can color their perception of the “products” we generate.
