HI THERE,
Over the last several months, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to many different people about leadership as our team worked to produce this issue of Inside Bauer.
Given my background in journalism, I had questions.
“Are leaders born, or can you teach leadership?”
“What qualities make a good leader?”
“How would you define your leadership style?”
As diverse a group as Bauer students, alumni, faculty and staff are, I found that their responses sounded pretty similar.
Sure, there are those “born leaders” you hear about, but that doesn’t mean that someone can’t be taught or coached how to lead a team ... in fact, Bauer College has several programs and initiatives to do just that.
Patience. Passion. Vision. Values. I definitely heard other words when I asked people what qualities a leader should have, but everyone seemed to agree that an effective leader needs to take risks and innovate, while giving team members the opportunity to understand and execute the mission — with integrity.
Everyone’s personal connection with leadership, though, was a bit different. Some described themselves as bold and decisive, while others focused on their ability to listen and use feedback to form a decision.
I hope that you find the stories in this issue of Inside Bauer inspiring and motivating. No matter your concept of leadership, I think the students, alumni, faculty and staff featured here illustrate that leaders have a responsibility greater than themselves.
If you’d like to connect with our team directly with an idea for a future issue of Inside Bauer, please email insidebauer@bauer.uh.edu or post on social media, using #InsideBauer. And, if you’re interested in advertising in the magazine, visit bauer.uh.edu/insidebauer/mediakit to learn more.
