About Chile
LonelyPlanet's guide to Chile is a good general overview with some nice pictures. General information and links for health and currency are useful.
The American Chamber of Commerce (locally referred to as AMCHAM) has information about Chile and business, in English.
The U.S. Embassy in Chile has a comprehensive web site with country information and current affairs.
The U.S. State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs provides Consular Information Sheets for a number of countries. You may find the general information at their Chile site useful.
The official travel guide to Chile might be useful for those students spending extra time in Chile before or after our learning abroad program. The web-site has general information about Chile, but also suggestions about what to do and where to go while in Chile!
Business Information
Business News Americas. This web site provides a great service -- you can subscribe to an email newsletter about business in five different economic sectors in most South American countries, including Chile. The web site provides a daily digest of news gleaned from many sources.
ProChile: Export Promotion Bureau. This is a Chilean government web site managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is a very comprehensive site. Their goal is to promote exports and strengthen the Chilean economy. Definitely worth a visit!
The CIA World Factbook is a treasure-trove of facts and information. Not pretty, just practical!
Another treasure house is the IMF (International Monetary Fund). Go to their web site and do a search using "Chile" as the search term. Some very interesting work! Keep this in mind for your course projects.
Cost & Payment Information
The cost of the Chile learning abroad trip is $1,950 and includes hotel accommodations (double rooms), breakfast, program excursions, and seminars. The cost of the trip does not include airfare, health insurance, transportation to and from the airport, UH tuition, or any other meals. Because of the current international political climate, we reserve the right to cancel the trip any time prior to departure should we believe that student safety is compromised.
In such a case, we will refund all fee payments made, but are not be responsible for airline ticket reimbursements or other related incurred expenses. You are required to purchase travel insurance as a part of your application process. The cost for one week of coverage is $9.95.
Fee Payments
To secure a space in the program, students must first complete a digital application in ViaTRM through our Learning Abroad office and then submit this form. Once these two steps are completed, a non-refundable $300 deposit fee will be charged to student's accounts. Final acceptance into the program will occur upon the receipt of all materials and payment of the deposit fee. The remaining amount will be added as a fee to the student's account at the end of October/early November.
The fee is non-refundable unless we cancel the trip.
Cost Savings
Students have found a number of ways to reduce their costs associated with this trip. First, some students use their frequent flier miles to save on airfare costs. Second, many students have convinced their employers to pay for the program as part of a employer's educational reimbursement program. Third, some students who apply for scholarships receive some money, so we strongly recommend that participants apply for scholarships. Information about these can be found at http://www.uh.edu/learningabroad/scholarships/.
International Travel Information
Participants must have a valid passport. Because a copy of your passport is required to sign up for the trip, if you do not have one you should apply for one as soon as possible. Students that are not U.S. citizens may require a Visa to enter/exit Chile. It is the student's responsibility to verify visa requirements for their nationality. It is also the student's responsibility to acquire all necessary visas. Go to the state department's web site to get more information about international travel.
Given the length of the flight and overnight flight effects, you will need to plan on departing early enough to arrive at least by late morning Sunday. From Houston, an evening flight out on Saturday will arrive in Santiago by mid-morning Sunday. Evening flights departing Saturday should return you home by mid-day Sunday.
Of course, you are free to add vacation time either before the program begins or after (if you aren't planning to enroll in traditional Spring courses).
Airlines
You are free to make arrangements to Santiago on any carrier available. United Airlines now offers direct flights from Houston – Santiago. If you are a member of frequent flyer programs, you may be able to take advantage of those programs. Check with the airlines' program representatives. You may also be able to get better rates through a corporate discount program within your company, so be sure to check with internal travel offices.
