Marvin Odum (MBA ’95), who is leading Houston recovery efforts after Hurricane Harvey and recently retired as chairman and president of Shell Oil Company and executive committee director of Royal Dutch Shell plc, will give the keynote speech during the Dec. 14 ceremony.

Marvin Odum, a native of Houston, recently retired as the Chairman/President of Shell Oil Company and Executive Committee Director for Royal Dutch Shell plc.

He joined Shell as an engineer in 1982 and held a variety of management positions in technical and commercial operations, including executive vice president for Exploration and Productions in the Americas, director of Americas Shell Gas and Power, and CEO of Intergen (a global power development and generation business).  He also played a leading role in developing Shell’s sustainability strategies.

Odum is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; Board member of the National Urban League; Dean’s Council member of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government; member of the Engineering Advisory Board for the University of Texas and Board of Visitors member of both the University of Houston and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

He earned a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas and an MBA from the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston.

After the devastating floods from Hurricane Harvey, Odum agreed to Mayor Sylvester Turner’s request that he lead Houston’s recovery efforts, a role for which he is accepting no salary.  He is leading a team charged with executing the multi-billion dollar reconstruction of city infrastructure and housing, including critical flood mitigation projects and policies to strengthen the city’s resilience to future disasters.

Odum and his wife Mariloli were married in 1984 and have three children: Lauren, Marvin, IV, and Taylor.  They are also blessed to have one grandchild.
