A nonprofit corporation that oversees audits of public companies has recognized a Bauer College graduate accounting student with a $10,000 scholarship.
The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) has selected MS Accountancy candidate Maritza Rodriguez as the recipient for their annual scholarship.
Established by the U.S. Congress after the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, the PCAOB oversees audits of public companies in order to protect investors and the public interest. Since 2012, the PCAOB has annually supported a Bauer College student with a scholarship.
“Dr. Mohan Kuruvilla told me about the scholarship, but I never thought I would be selected since there is only one nomination per university,” Rodriguez said. “One day, Dr. Michael Newman asked me to come by his office for a potential scholarship. I was honored to find out that Dr. Kaye Newberry and Dr. Newman were nominating me on behalf of the Department of Accountancy & Taxation.”
Rodriguez has also received scholarships from the Houston chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI) and the Ted Bauer Undergraduate Business Scholarship during her undergraduate career at Bauer, helping her focus on her studies, she said.
“These scholarships have allowed me to focus on my professional and academic development. They have demonstrated that hard work and determination gets recognized in many ways,” Rodriguez added. “Now in my graduate year, I also have more time to give back to students as president of the Internal Audit Student Association and the 2016 engagement representative for Ted Bauer Undergraduate Business Scholars.”
