Program Format & Structure

Do you offer the MS Real Estate program fully online or in a hybrid format?
The MS Real Estate program is designed as a fully in-person experience on the University of Houston’s main campus. This format allows students to build strong connections with faculty, classmates, and industry leaders through face-to-face interaction and Houston-based networking opportunities.

Is the program full time or part time?
The program is a part-time, in-person program designed for working professionals who typically come to campus 2 nights per week.

When are classes held?
Courses meet once a week in the evenings, typically from 6 - 9 p.m.

Are weekend or remote options available?
All classes meet on weekday evenings to accommodate working professionals and allow for valuable in-class discussions, collaboration, and guest lectures from industry experts.

How long does it take to complete the program?
The program requires 30 credit hours. Most students complete the degree in 5 semesters, or less than 2 calendar years.

Will students take courses in the summer?
Yes. During the first summer, students enroll do enroll in summer classes.

What are the admissions requirements?

Does the program offer GMAT/GRE waivers?
The admissions committee makes final decisions on waivers. Applicants are encouraged to apply regardless. However, a competitive GMAT/GRE score can strengthen your application and improve scholarship opportunities.

Is the MS Real Estate program part of the accelerated pathway program?
The MS Real Estate program is a stand-alone graduate degree designed for both early-career and experienced professionals who want to deepen their expertise in commercial real estate. It is not part of an accelerated pathway.

Student Profile

Do most students work full time?
Yes. Virtually all MS Real Estate students work full time and attend classes part time in the evenings.

Is the program suited for mid-career professionals or those new to real estate?
The program is primarily designed for experienced professionals, including those from outside the real estate industry (e.g., energy, project management, finance) with transferable skills. Most applicants have 3–5 years of experience. However, the program also welcomes students making career shifts into real estate.

Year 1

  • Fall: FINA 6A35 – Managerial Finance (1.5 CH); FINA 7A10 – Intermediate Corporate Finance (1.5 CH); FINA 7381 – Principles of Real Estate (3 CH)
  • Spring: BZAN 6310 – Quantitative Analysis for Business Decisions (3 CH); FINA 7380 – Real Estate Finance (3 CH)
  • Summer: FINA 7A97 – Innovation in Real Estate (3 CH)

Do classes include site visits or discussions of local issues?
Yes. Some courses include site visits in Houston. All courses integrate discussions of local market issues and developments, though faculty also bring in national and global examples.
