Who Qualifies as an International Applicant?

An applicant is considered international if they are not a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident. International applicants may be in the United States on an educational, worker or visitor visa, or be residing in their home country.

An applicant who has filed an application for United States Permanent Residency, but has not yet been granted approval, is considered an international applicant.

Additionally, applicants who are in the United States without status or are covered under DACA must apply as international applicants even if they are considered Texas residents for tuition rate purposes.

When Should International Applicants Apply?

International applicants are urged to submit their application for admission well in advance of the admissions deadline for their intended semester of entry. The application deadline is the deadline by which both the online application and all supporting documents (official transcripts, official test scores, letters of recommendation, etc.) must be received.

Official transcripts from colleges and universities outside the United States must be sent hardcopy via mail or courier service to the UH Graduate School. Please allow additional time for these transcripts to be shipped and processed.

Applying early ensures there is enough time in case additional information is needed before a decision is reached. Additionally, applying early allows incoming students time to secure housing, student visas (if applicable), etc. well before the start of the semester.
