Application Process

The application process requires you to (1) complete the UH Doctoral Application online, (2) pay the appropriate application fees, (3) request the official GMAT/GRE, TOEFL (if application), and transcripts to be sent to the University of Houston Admissions Office either electronically or by mail.

Here’s a detailed list of information for application requirements.

In order for your application to receive full consideration, the admissions office must have received your completed application and all supporting documents by the application deadline.

Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is a short essay to present yourself and convince the Bauer faculty of your qualification and fit for our Ph.D. programs. The statement of purpose should (1) describe your past experience, especially experience that is relevant to your intended field of study; (2) specify what particularly excites you about a research area or topic; (3) tell us whether any faculty’s research is of interest to you. Of course, you may include any additional information that you consider relevant.

Résumé or CV

Your résumé or CV should succinctly summarize your qualification, including but not limited to your contact information, education background, honors and awards, achievements, research interests, relevant coursework, and a list of references.

Transcript and Academic Records

Your transcript tells the admissions committee a great deal about you as a student. Our application requires you to upload your official transcript from each institution that you list in your online application. The uploaded transcripts must be a copy of the official transcript issued by your institution and include the front and back of each page of the transcript.

If your transcript is in a language other than English, please include an English translation. Upload your transcripts with their accompanying translation as part of your application. Translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records.

If you choose to have your transcripts sent by mail:

If you choose to have your transcripts sent electronically:
Within the state of Texas, the fastest way to send your transcript is electronically. Please inquire at your previous institution about this option. Electronic transcripts can be delivered via email to gradschool@uh.edu.

Any discrepancy between the uploaded transcript and the official transcript could result in the denial of your application or withdrawal of your offer of admission.

International students please review all the information provided on the Graduate School website regarding transcripts and verified translations and other relevant information.

Letters of Recommendation

We require three letters of recommendation of each applicant. Usually, letters written by academics who know you well are the most helpful. Such letters tend to tell us the most relevant information about an applicant’s academic potential. You may however request letters from non-academia if you consider they may provide the most relevant reference for you.

Do not upload recommendation letters yourself. Our application system will request letters of recommendation on your behalf, using the email you’ve provided in your application. Once a recommender has been verified, he/she will be able to log into the system to complete a recommendation form and will also have the option to upload a recommendation letter.

It is important to request letter writers early, as writing an informative letter takes time. Communicate with your letter writers to ensure that they submit the letters online before the application deadline (link to new page “Deadlines and Decisions”). You should check the status of your recommendation letters on the application hub to ensure they arrive on time.

GMAT or GRE

All applicants are required to take either the GMAT or the GRE. This cannot be waived. There are no exceptions. Bauer Ph.D. programs accept either the GMAT, Online GMAT, or the GRE. If an Online GMAT score is submitted, a writing sample must be uploaded. Scores cannot be older than 5 years.

Official GMAT or GRE score sent directly from the Educational Testing Service is required. The University of Houston's code for GMAT is XT1-26-69, and GRE is 6870.

TOEFL

TOEFL or equivalent is required for all international applicants, except for those who earned a college degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral) from the countries in this list. An unofficial TOEFL score report is acceptable before admission decisions are made. TOEFL scores must be no older than 2 years. The University of Houston's TOEFL Institutional Code is 6870.

Bauer College Ph.D. programs have a higher requirement than the UH Graduate School. The minimum TOEFL score required is 105 for the internet-based test (iBT). Alternative tests such as IELTS or Duolingo test are accepted. The minimum overall score for IELTS is 7.5. The minimum score of Duolingo is 125.

Application Fee

The non-refundable application fee is $50 for domestic applicants, and $80 for international applicants.
